Ever wondered how your friend or course mate just seemed to be more productive than you are, despite all you do? Ever wondered what your friend who always say he or she is busy does? The answer to this is related to the topic. Sit back and enjoy…

What is Progress Tracking?

Progress tracking is how one manages, monitors or keeps track of his or her own progress to remain focus. It could be done for a team work or done individually. There are times when a day comes to an end and we can’t point to things we did that were so beneficial. But we were busy somehow through out the day yet, we did nothing really.

Why Progress Tracking?

The benefit of progress tracking can in no way be hidden. it ends up being seen in the life of the tracker and also, if team, in the progress made in a team.

Little reasons for why progress tracking is necessary are:

  1. It checks for improvement.
  2. It makes you know if one is on the right path or not.
  3. It reinforces your knowledge. More like a reflection.
  4. It makes one focus. This is one of its great importance.

How to keep track.

  1. The how to keep track starts with a goal.

There must be a goal one is working towards to keep track of. Goals can be set weekly. Goals should be things set aside to have a personal purpose. Progress tracking has to be done to monitor the progress made by one aiming at a goal.

2. Gather tool

Tools are necessary for progress tracking. The tools could be a journal. The reason for the Journal is to have where one writes one’s goals. And also, its where one writes one’s day to day goals.

If an hard skill such as software development, data science and so on, the journal could be a having a Github account.

The main benefit of this Journal is to Track progress.

Another tool is having someone to talk too. More like having someone to report to. This gives one the mind of accountability, and this person could serve as a reminder when one is loosing track. And this also inspires another to get better.

3. Mind work

We are in the age of distraction where we easily get distracted from whatever we set our heart to. Distraction from friends, the social media, and many more. This is where mind work comes in. It is a mind discipline.

How does it go?

If I am to read for an hour, then I set my mind to read for an hour straight limiting every possible distractions.

If its time to play, then, my mind is set for play.

This makes our mind disciplined in its thoughts and thereby cause us to improve.

4. Accessing the work done.

There is paramount need to ask oneself after the day job, how fa? This is more of a review. Was this done? why didn’t I? If its about reading, what did I learn? was the set rule followed? This gives one the consciousness of improvement. This makes one get better and provides goals for the next day.

Among all of these, there’s need to have a vision board. A vision board is like a poster board but it has all your goals boldly written to remind you of what is to be done and to remind you of what you want to be.

This was what I learnt in one of the soft skill class facilitated by Sir Daniel Sumah. It was a beautiful class. I so much learnt a lot.

Thank you Sir Dan, thank you GemMine.
